some pictures from the last of 2009.

{a day of much-needed rain}

{cookies for santa}

{a visit from santa, of course. apparently he vacations next door. who knew?}

{a huge christmas eve meal with andrew, j, and his kids.}

{and an even bigger meal for christmas.}

{santa brought j a ludwig set. needless to say, he was a very happy boy.}

{santa brought me a few cool gifts, too. needless to say, i was a very happy girl.}

christmas was filled with love, togetherness, and relaxation. and it was beautiful and warm enough to wear flip-flops. we played with all our toys, then spent the day after christmas not fighting the crowds at the mall, but using up our annual passes at the aquarium.

all in all a fabulous christmas. tonight will be very low-key. have a safe and wonderful new year’s eve!

an epic summer.

it’s good to reflect when something good comes to an end, and this summer has definitely been an epic one. that’s my new favorite word. epic. among other things it means majestic or impressively great, and that’s the only way i can describe our first summer with j. it was a dream come true, topped off with a great trip to hawaii.

every morning j woke up, looked out the window, and said, “mommy, daddy. the beach is close!” it was like he couldn’t believe it, and every morning had to check if it was really true. despite all the things we did he remembers the beach, his friends natalie and isabel, and his cousins elijah, carson, and frankie being there with him.

while in hawaii, there was a column written by andreas arvman in the honolulu advertiser where the writer discussed a trip he and his wife planned to sweden with two young daughters. despite the many activities they planned, their eldest (2 1/2 years old) remembered running around in her grandmother’s backyard the most. the article made me think back on my fondest traveling memories, and yes, like the author discussed, it was the people that i shared them with that i remembered the most. and i’m sure it will be same for j.

it was a summer of long leisurely mornings, al fresco meals and a (re)discovery of good, slow food, hours of looking at the pacific, playing in the sand, journeys to see new and familiar family, little adventures, sharing joy and laughter with good friends, and, most memorable, becoming one step closer to being a forever family. summer, we will never forget you!

bits from our week{end}: little adventures.

we’ve been cramming as much activity into our last few days of summer…a trip to the zoo with cousins, and a ride on the train (metrolink) to san juan capistrano for lunch and more animals at zoomars. as if we don’t have enough animals at home, huh?

p.s. kids were free on metrolink. this was a great full-day adventure for little cost!

life is rad…

when you hang out at a playground at the beach…and get to watch the waves while you swing. ..and listen to free music by a cool stray cats-like band by the pier. we love summer.

happy 4th!

my only claim to any celebrity was that for three years i was a parade announcer for the huntington beach 4th of july parade. ha! after three years i was so over it, so i happily relinquished my position to andrew, who loved it of course (being a middle child who lives on that kind of attention). : ) this year he lost his job, due to the economy. (no one gets paid, but there is the cost of set up). boo.

we are still attending, however, and are looking more forward to it than ever because this will be the first 4th we celebrate with j.

hope your 4th is fabulous!
