marriage advice.

Not from me! Lord, no! But I did see this in Parade Magazine this weekend and thought it was simple and common sense, and something many of us forget to do.

{our wedding}

1. COMMUNICATE YOUR GOALS
It’s easy to complain when you’re unhappy; it takes work to sort out what you really need in your marriage. So write it down. And not just, “Be happy.” Spell out your short- and long-term goals-. Then share them with your spouse. Be prepared to listen to what he or she wants for the two of you, too.

2. LEARN TO ‘LIKE’ YOUR MATE
Loving someone is a gift. Liking someone is more pragmatic. Tell your spouse something that you like about him or her every day. Be specific: “I like how kind you are to the neighbor’s dog” is far better than “I like that you’re nice.”
3. PULL OUT A HAPPY FACE
Keep a picture of the two of you at your happiest and look at it whenever you’re annoyed with one another. Going through an old photo album together also can help to remind you why you’re a couple.
4. MAKE PEACE, NOT WAR
Every couple disagrees sometimes. But pitched battles don’t solve anything. Come to the negotiating table. Compromise. But don’t try to solve problems when you’re angry with each other. Cool down and remember why you married this person. Choosing the same day each week to sit down and talk can take the tension out of disagreements and cut down on day-to-day sniping. And be thoughtful. Before you speak, ask yourself, “If I were to hear what I’m about to say, how would I respond?”
5. GO ON DATES
Real dates. A slice of pizza and a movie is not an evening on the town. Also, no discussing kids or mortgages. Take turns being the planner. When in doubt about what to do, try to imagine what your partner would enjoy. A date should make the other person feel like you’re making an effort.

(p.s. “I like how you are kind to the neighbor’s dog”? This must’ve been a bad day if that’s all you can think of!) : )

la vita è bella…a question for you.

as i was perusing beautiful pictures like this-

i was reminded of my favorite movie, life is beautiful, a movie one of my best friends, kristi s. from seattle, introduced me to (someone who reads but NEVER comments…hint, hint). if you’ve never seen this movie, please rent it immediately. you will not be sorry.

i guess i am quite proud of myself that my favorite movie is a foreign flick (so cosmopolitan, oui?), i do have to admit that some of my other faves are those good ol’ classics animal house and porky’s.

what can i say? i am easily entertained and not too much of a critic.

if you’re reading this, comment on what your favorite movie s’il vous plaît…i would love to know!

happy weekend everyone! this is summer’s last one so make it wonderful!

the {not so} perfect day

today i feel somewhat “normal”, although i still have some shots of pain here and there.

i am dog-sitting for my mother so yes…we have 6 dogs and 2 cats and i have to remind myself to constantly remain patient while i attend to their needs as well as to j’s. oh today was definitely a test of patience.

today…

our coffee machine broke. this was a major catastrophe for hubby, and he woke me up at 6:00 a.m. to tell me so. once we got up and running i purchased the one i’ve been wanting for some time. crisis averted.

today…

while i mowed the lawn j locked me out of the house. i had no idea this little rascal even knew how to work the locks. i ran around frantically trying to figure out how to get into the house while he smiled at me from inside. thank goodness i opened a room window so yes, i climbed through to get in.

today…

i thought it would be fun to take j to the park to feed the ducks. he thought it would be more fun to break away from me and try to dive into the pond. as i pulled him closer to me he screamed bloody murder as everyone there stared.

today…

i tried to cook dinner while j had a meltdown and screamed for close to 45 minutes. this kid is going to be an actor! oh, the dramatics! the lamentation, the piercing cries, the staming of the feet. the academy award goes to….j!

cupcake anyone? i’m throwing myself a pity party. : )

just kidding. i love this little guy, and he rarely has a tantrum compared to other children. i will look upon this post fondly when he someday mentions me in his acceptance speech for his outstanding performance in a lead male role. oh yeah… and we will throw a big party with a tables of cupcakes and candy.

cupcake recovery.

i think i was dreaming of red velvet cupcakes when i woke up from surgery.

hubby asked me what i “needed” tonight since i’m still not 100%. “nothing,” i said, “but i would love a cupcake and a movie.”

to aid in in my recovery hubby brought home a red velvet cupcake and this.

nice hubby.

we are so fortunate to now have a neighborhood cupcake store. fabulous!

and look at this! a whole blog dedicated to cupcakes! such a beautiful world we live in!

p.s. my surgery went well. the nurses and doctors were fantastic. i am clean out of endo (for now). my tummy still hurts though. cupcakes do help with this pain. : )

yaba diga do.

{picture via inchmark}

yesterday j says, “mama?”

“yes?” says i.

“yaba diga do?” (hands held high to show just how large whatever “it” is that he is explaining)

i can only imagine what story he was telling. another funny thing he does lately is walk across the room with eyes closed and hands held out, as if he’s pretending to be blind. i have no idea where he got this from. the only thing i can think of is that sometimes i pretend to be asleep but he can tell one of my eyes is sort of opened.

because parents say they always forget the funny things kids say (and they DO say funny things, don’t they?), i think this is a fabulous idea. i will definitely use it!
